J.J. McCarthy’s future with the Minnesota Vikings is now uncertain after tests revealed a meniscus tear in his right knee. The rookie quarterback is set to undergo surgery this week, with his return timeline hinging on whether the procedure involves a minor trim, which could see him back this season, or a full repair that might keep him sidelined until 2025.
Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell confirmed the injury, which McCarthy sustained during Saturdayโs 24-23 preseason win over the Las Vegas Raiders. Despite throwing two touchdown passes, McCarthy only reported discomfort on Monday, surprising the teamโs medical staff.
In a message to fans on X, McCarthy expressed optimism: “Love you Viking nation. I’ll be back in no time. Amor fati,” referencing the philosophy of embracing all experiences, both good and bad.
The Vikings’ medical team will determine the best course of action during surgery, prioritizing McCarthy’s long-term health. “That’s a completely medical decision,” O’Connell said, emphasizing that he trusts the team’s medical experts and the surgeons involved.
With McCarthy sidelined, veteran Sam Darnold, who joined the Vikings on a one-year, $10 million deal after a season with the San Francisco 49ers, is set to be the starting quarterback for Week 1. Darnold has taken almost all the first-team snaps in training camp and started in the preseason game against the Raiders. While McCarthy showed potential, throwing two impressive touchdown passes in the third quarter, Darnold remains the clear choice to lead the team as the season approaches.
“Sam’s had a really good camp, and my confidence in him is very, very high,” O’Connell said, praising Darnoldโs growth and performance. “I’m looking forward to seeing him continue to progress in our offense.”
Drafted 10th overall by the Vikings after parting ways with Kirk Cousins, McCarthy had been making strides since a rocky start in spring OTAs and minicamps. He stayed in Minnesota over the summer to refine his mechanics, and his steady improvement was on display during the preseason debut against the Raiders, where he completed 11 of 17 passes for 188 yards.
The setback is disappointing for both McCarthy and the Vikings, but the team remains focused on the upcoming season, with Darnold ready to step into the starting role.
