Sources: U.S. Soccer Makes Contact with Jürgen Klopp, But a Transfer Seems Doubtful

United States Soccer has started contacting potential candidates to replace Gregg Berhalter, who was sacked yesterday and has reached out to Jürgen Klopp, the former manager of Liverpool. However, sources have informed us that it is very unlikely that Klopp would continue with the discussions.

Klopp, 57, has said repeatedly that he intends to take a 12-month break from managing after almost nine years with Liverpool. A source has said that Klopp could not be able to handle it again, and that doesn’t even take into account his probable substantial financial needs, which would exceed eight figures.

After the United States national soccer team’s dismal performance in the 2024 Copa América—in which they did not make it out of the group stage—the United States formally relieved Berhalter of his responsibilities as manager on Wednesday. The team is now searching for a new manager.

U.S. Soccer’s sports director, Matt Crocker, told reporters on Wednesday that he plans to begin the search for a new manager “straight away” and appoint a successor before the September international window.

“I just want to get the best coach possible that can help the team win and whether they’re from the U.S. or elsewhere, they’ve got to fit the profile, which is a serial winning coach, somebody that can continue to develop this potential group of players,” said Crocker.

Crocker is ready to go with an interim coach if needed, but he wants to get things up fast.

“I also understand some of the challenges why that might not happen by September,” according to him. “And if it doesn’t happen in my head, I know what my contingency plan would be to see through the September window with a level of consistency to make sure that there’s no huge disruption and change.”
