Real Madrid’s Thibaut Courtois Supports Rodri in Strike Action

Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has thrown his support behind Rodri’s alarming statement regarding the possibility of players resorting to strike action due to the overwhelming number of matches they’re required to play.

In a press conference on Tuesday, the Manchester City midfielder expressed that a players’ strike was “close” because of football’s grueling fixture schedule. He noted, “I believe this reflects the general sentiment among players. If things continue as they are, we may reach a point where we have no choice but to take action.”

Both Real Madrid and Manchester City are competing in UEFA’s restructured Champions League this season and are also set to participate in FIFA’s inaugural Club World Cup in the United States next summer. This intense schedule could push both teams to play over 70 matches this season, intensifying concerns about player welfare and workload.

“Rodri is absolutely right,” Courtois stated during a conversation with popular Spanish streamer Ibai Llanos on Wednesday. “The number of games we’re facing is overwhelming. Fans want to see the best players on the pitch, but we need to strike a balance. The sheer volume of matches is leading to more injuries.”

He went on to highlight the impact of tournaments like the Nations League and the Club World Cup, which only add to the already packed schedule. “People often say we earn a lot of money and shouldn’t complain, and that’s fair,” he acknowledged. “However, we must find that crucial balance because the best players can’t always be available to compete.”

Real Madrid kicked off their Champions League campaign with a solid 3-1 victory over Stuttgart on Tuesday. However, the Spanish champions have struggled in La Liga, currently trailing leaders Barcelona by four points.

Amidst this backdrop, there has been speculation regarding the future of forward Rodrygo following Kylian Mbappé’s arrival. Despite the rumors, the Brazilian international demonstrated his value by providing the assist for Mbappé’s first Champions League goal for the club during the match against Stuttgart.

The Madrid media have started referring to the team’s attacking trio as the “BMV” — an abbreviation for Bellingham, Mbappé, and Vinícius, notably leaving out Rodrygo.

Courtois weighed in on the situation, stating, “Journalists prefer to use three letters, so they highlight Jude, Vini, and Mbappé.” He emphasized that within the dressing room, everyone recognizes Rodrygo’s importance and talent. “He doesn’t need to feel upset about this, but if he elevates his game, then let him show that frustration.”

When did Courtois transfer to Real Madrid?

On August 8, 2018, Real Madrid officially announced the signing of Thibaut Courtois on a six-year contract. The following day, Chelsea confirmed the transfer, which was reported to be around £35 million. Courtois made his debut for Madrid on September 1, 2018, starting in a commanding 4-1 victory against Leganés.

Who is the Real Madrid goalkeeper now?

Thibaut Courtois is the current Real Madrid goalkeeper. He is a Belgian international and is widely regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the world.
