The incident resulted in the officer-involved being reassigned to administrative duty following concerns about the handling of the situation. Lyles acknowledged the gravity of the event, stating that Hill’s detainment is a far more significant matter than their friendly rivalry.
“The two scenarios are completely different—one is about being human, and the other is about sports,” Lyles emphasized. “No one should have to endure what Tyreek went through, regardless of the circumstances. At the end of the day, we’re all human beings, and we deserve to be treated with respect.”
Despite the seriousness of the situation, Lyles didn’t shy away from the idea of racing Hill, provided Hill was genuinely interested. He confidently added that Hill could give it a try in a one-on-one matchup, but no matter the outcome, it wouldn’t change his standing as the world champion.
“In terms of running a race, look, man, you’ve got to be serious,” Lyles stated. “Everyone wants to jump straight to the top. Everybody wants to challenge the fastest man because they think it is easy or that I have taken an easy path. You can’t just take a shot at the title, but I’ll let you take a shot at me,” he added with a confident grin. Lyles made it clear that while the challenge is open, there’s more to it than just stepping up to the plate.
