Manchester United finalized the sale of Bologna forward Joshua Zirkzee for more than €40 million ($43 million), the club confirmed Sunday.
Zirkzee signed a deal with United until June 2029, with the possibility of extending it for another season.
“Having had discussions with the manager and the leaders of the club I know how exciting the future is going to be here and I cannot wait to play my part in achieving success for Manchester United,” Zirkzee said in a statement issued by the team.
“I am a player who has always given all to win; I am ready for the next challenge, to advance in my career and win more championships.
“It is an honor to be a member of such a famous club. I need to take a small rest now after being with the national team, but I’ll be back ready to make an impact right away.”
According to sources, the two clubs reached an agreement worth more than the release clause in Zirkzee’s contract, allowing United to pay a smaller portion of the price upfront. Zirkzee is United’s first signing of the summer.
Zirkzee was a target for many teams this summer, including AC Milan, the Serie A runners-up from last season. He will fight with Rasmus Højlund for the starting striker position at Old Trafford next season.
“Securing a forward to add to our already strong group of attacking players was a key goal this summer,” United sports director Dan Ashworth said in a statement. “We are delighted that we have signed a player of Joshua’s caliber so early in the transfer window.
“Joshua is an exceptional talent who is poised to make an impact for Manchester United. His skills and ambition to develop into a world-class player make him an excellent addition to the group that we are assembling for the exciting season ahead and beyond.”
Last year, the Bologna team was led by the 23-year-old’s 12 goals.
