Liverpool have officially secured the signing of winger Federico Chiesa from Juventus, as the Premier League club confirmed on Thursday. The deal, valued at โฌ12 million ($13.3m) plus an additional โฌ3 million in potential add-ons, brings Chiesa into an already formidable attacking lineup alongside Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota, Cody Gakpo, and Luis Dรญaz.
“Iโm thrilled to be a Liverpool player,” Chiesa expressed on the clubโs official website. “When sporting director Richard Hughes reached out to me and asked, โDo you want to join Liverpool?โโand the coach called as wellโI immediately said yes. Iโm fully aware of this clubโs history and what it means to the fans. Iโm so excited and canโt wait to get started.”
The 26-year-old winger was previously on the verge of joining Barcelona for a similar fee earlier this month. However, the LaLiga club struggled to structure the deal due to stringent salary cap regulations, which also delayed the registration of their new signing, Dani Olmo, causing him to miss the first two league games.
Chiesaโs contract with Juventus was set to expire at the end of the current season. Despite being instrumental in Italy’s Euro 2020 victory under Roberto Mancini, Chiesa has been plagued by injuries, including a 10-month ACL recovery period. Thiago Motta, who replaced Massimiliano Allegri as Juventusโ coach for the season, informed Chiesa earlier in the transfer window that he was free to leave, as he wasnโt part of the clubโs plans for 2024-25.
Chiesa now becomes Arne Slotโs second signing for Liverpool, following the acquisition of Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili on Tuesday for โฌ40 million. The 23-year-old Georgian keeper, who helped his national team reach the round of 16 in their first major tournament at Euro 2024, will stay with Valencia until the end of the season before making the move to Anfield next summer.
How much did Liverpool pay for Chiesa?
Liverpool paid ยฃ12.5 million to sign Federico Chiesa from Juventus. The fee was structured as an initial ยฃ10 million upfront, plus ยฃ2.5 million in add-ons that are dependent on Liverpool winning the Premier League and Champions League.
Why is Liverpool signing Chiesa?
Chiesa has experienced injury concerns in recent years, but his relatively cheap cost may be attributed mostly to Juventus’ willingness to move a player with just one year left on his contract and is not in the plans of newly hired manager Thiago Motta.
Where will Chiesa play?
Federico Chiesa is expected to play for Juventus in the 2024-2025 season. He is currently recovering from a knee injury but is expected to be available for selection soon.
