Defensive end Josh Allen, who has been named to two Pro Bowls, will be changing his last name to Hines-Allen, the club said Tuesday. The change is a “tribute to Joshua’s maternal side of the family and the other relatives who have worn ‘Hines’ and ‘Hines-Allen’ on their jerseys.”
Myisha Hines-Allen, Hines-Allen’s sister, plays for the Washington Mystics of the Women’s National Basketball Association. Kyra Hines-Allen (Cheyney University) and LaTorri Hines-Allen (Virginia Tech, Towson) both played collegiate basketball. The Hines family has a long basketball history; Josh Hines-Allen’s uncle Gregory played for Hampton University and was picked by the Warriors in 1983. Keith Hines was a Montclair State basketball player.
“Legacy is forever, and I’m proud to carry that tradition on the back of my jersey, following in the footsteps of my family, who have donned the Hines-Allen last name with so much pride and joy,” Hines-Allen said on Tuesday on Instagram.
In a video accompanying the post, he said, “My last name has changed, but I’m still the same guy. And I’ll keep playing like it, even better. The Jaguars have announced that Hines-Allen will organize a jersey swap for supporters in September.
Hines-Allen, who had a career-high and Jaguars franchise-record 17.5 sacks last season, was rewarded with a five-year contract extension in April.
