New York Jets defensive end Haason Reddick, who has yet to get the new deal he has been pursuing, is not expected to report to training camp with the rest of his squad on Tuesday, according to Adam Schefter.
Reddick is in the last year of his deal and is set to earn $14.5 million this season.
According to the collective bargaining agreement, Reddick will be penalized $50,000 every day for holding out. The fine cannot be waived.
Looking to increase his deal, Reddick boycotted the entire offseason program, including the mandated minicamp in June. The Jets were startled by Reddick’s position, despite the fact that his team had made it apparent before the deal that he wanted a new contract.
In 2022, Reddick agreed to a three-year, $45 million deal with the Eagles. He thought he had surpassed the contract after recording 50.5 sacks over the past four seasons, which ranked fourth in the NFL. According to the Roster Management System, the average annual salary of $15 million ranked 20th among edge players.
At the time of the deal, the Jets believed Reddick, who turns 30 on September 22, was willing to play out the last year of his contract before entering free agency. There may have been a misunderstanding, or perhaps Reddick changed his mind. In any case, both sides gave off an unusual appearance.
Reddick will play an important part for the Jets, who were third in yards allowed in 2023. He’ll start on the four-man defensive line, which is anchored by Pro Bowl tackle Quinnen Williams. With Reddick, the Jets boast their most accomplished edge rusher in 20 years.
The Jets signed Reddick after losing their sack leader, Bryce Huff, to the Eagles in free agency. The Jets traded a 2026 conditional third-round selection for Reddick, which can be upgraded to a second-round pick if he plays 67.5% of snaps and registers at least 10 sacks in 2024.
With Reddick set to start, the Jets moved defensive end John Franklin-Myers to the Denver Broncos in April, citing financial considerations.
