Former Bengals first-round pick Billy Price retires from NFL

Former Cincinnati Bengals center and first-round pick, Billy Price, announced his retirement from the NFL on Saturday. He revealed that a life-threatening health issue prompted this decision. The 29-year-old shared that he had surgery this offseason to treat a pulmonary embolism, a severe and sudden health condition.

In an Instagram post, Price described the frightening experience and expressed thankfulness for surviving. He emphasized life’s unpredictability and the shock of facing such a serious issue despite being in peak physical condition. The necessity of blood thinners to avoid future complications carried a significant risk of internal bleeding, a factor that influenced his decision to retire from professional football. Price voiced his gratitude for his NFL journey, celebrating the moments he experienced in renowned stadiums and with skilled teammates.

On April 24th, I underwent emergency surgery for a pulmonary embolism to remove a saddle clot that was affecting both of my lungs. As a generally healthy 29-year-old, experiencing an unexpected pulmonary embolism without a clear medical cause is extremely unsettling. I am immensely grateful to be alive. Regrettably, I have decided to retire from the NFL because the risk of internal bleeding while on blood thinners is too high.

The Cincinnati Bengals selected Price with the 21st overall pick in the 2018 draft. He spent three seasons with them before being traded to the New York Giants in 2021. Throughout his career, he participated in 69 games and started in 45 of them.

In his three seasons with the Bengals, Price showed his commitment and skill on the field. Eventually, he was traded to the New York Giants, where he finished his rookie contract.

In 2022, he joined the Arizona Cardinals and made 11 starts, showcasing his impact on the team. In 2023, Price moved to the Dallas Cowboys’ practice squad. Throughout his six-year NFL tenure, he played in 69 games, consistently demonstrating his dedication to the sport.

His sudden retirement highlights the inherent risks athletes face, concerning both their health and the uncertainty of their careers. Price’s choice to retire stresses the importance of health and the delicate nature of life, even for successful and athletic individuals.

“I am grateful for the chance to perform in some of the most incredible environments across the globe. “I am grateful to have trained and played alongside men who will continue to make Pro Bowls, All-Pro Teams, and Hall of Fame selections,” he stated Friday.

In professional sports, the focus often remains on the field, where athletes exhibit their talents. However, the stories of perseverance, sacrifice, and challenges behind the scenes are equally significant.

Billy Price’s unforeseen retirement is a stark reminder of the physical demands and unexpected health issues athletes may confront. His brave decision to prioritize his health underscores the importance of listening to one’s body and taking necessary steps for well-being, despite uncertainties and career goals. As Billy Price moves to the next phase of his life, his legacy will capture not just his on-field accomplishments but also his bravery in facing adversity and prioritizing his health.

He also thanked his wife for her unwavering support and sacrifices throughout his career. With his NFL chapter closing, Price anticipates moving forward with his wife as they continue their life journey and plan to grow their family.
