Throughout the Denver Broncos’ complex roster decisions, wide receiver Tim Patrick’s two-year struggle to return from significant injuries has been a testament to his resilience and popularity. However, the team faces tough choices in a deep wide receiver corps that could impact Patrick’s future.
Sources have confirmed that the Broncos are actively seeking trade partners for Patrick. If no trade materializes, he is expected to be released before the league-wide roster cut deadline on Tuesday, which will reduce teams to 53 players. Patrick has been made aware of the team’s intentions, adding a layer of difficulty to the decision given his grit and high regard among teammates.
Coach Sean Payton praised Patrick’s perseverance, noting, “A veteran with a lot of grit and respect for what he’s overcome. He’s one of those players who really stands out in terms of toughness.”
Similarly, running back Samaje Perine faces potential release due to the crowded depth chart at his position. Patrick, who missed the entire 2022 season with a torn ACL and the 2023 season with a torn Achilles tendon, had worked hard to return for training camp. Despite his efforts, including five catches for 44 yards and a touchdown in the preseason, the team’s draft picks and recent signings may lead to his departure.
The Broncos drafted wide receivers Troy Franklin and Devaughn Vele in April, both of whom are expected to secure roster spots. General Manager George Paton compared Vele to Patrick, emphasizing the team’s evolving roster needs. Additionally, the Broncos signed free agent Josh Reynolds and have Courtland Sutton and Marvin Mims Jr. poised for significant roles.
At running back, Perine, who has been a reliable third-down option, is competing against Javonte Williams, Jaleel McLaughlin, rookie Audric Estime, and fullback Michael Burton. Perine did not play in the preseason finale against the Arizona Cardinals, further hinting at possible changes.
As the Broncos finalize their roster, the future for Patrick and Perine remains uncertain, underscoring the tough decisions facing the team as they aim to balance talent and depth.
