Heading into the 2024 season, the Detroit Lions had most of their roster in good shape, but one area of concern was the kicker position. However, two games into the season that worry has yet to materialize, as the team’s kicking game has been flawless so far.
Despite this success, the Lions bolstered their practice squad on Wednesday by signing another former United Football League kicker, Matthew McCrane. The move is not a reflection of rookie Jake Bates’ performance—Bates, who also has UFL experience, has been outstanding, going 5-for-5 on field goals and 3-for-3 on extra points. Although all of his attempts have been from inside 40 yards, Bates has been perfect in every opportunity presented.
The addition of Matthew McCrane is a depth move for the Lions, coming just a day after the New York Giants signed veteran kicker Greg Joseph from Detroit’s practice squad. Despite this being a strategic roster move, McCrane appears to be a strong acquisition for the team.
During this past UFL season, McCrane ranked just behind Jake Bates in made field goals, finishing with 16—the third-most in the league. Impressively, he accomplished this on two fewer attempts, boasting an 80% conversion rate with a long kick of 58 yards. McCrane’s consistency makes him a valuable addition to the Lions’ special teams unit.
McCrane, 30, made a name for himself at Kansas State from 2014 to 2017 and has since spent time with several NFL teams, primarily as a backup or competition for the starting kicker role. Despite never securing a starting spot in the NFL, McCrane has excelled in spring leagues like the UFL and the American Football League, showcasing his talent and reliability.
While Jake Bates has performed exceptionally well so far this season, the Lions have ensured they are prepared for any scenario by adding McCrane. Should Bates falter, the team now has a proven kicker waiting in the wings, ready to step in if needed.
