Olympic gold medalist Noah Lyles made an appearance at the Sports Center this week, where he discussed his incredible gold medal performance in the 100-meter final in Paris last month. He also touched on his impressive bronze-medal run in the 200 meters, which came despite a recent battle with Covid-19. However, the conversation quickly shifted to the playful exchange of words between Lyles and Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill.
Hill, renowned for his blazing speed on the football field, clocked the third-fastest time in the NFL last season at an impressive 22.01 mph. After Lylesโ Olympic victory, Hill issued a public challenge to race him. Lyles, however, shrugged off the challenge with a bit of humor, telling Shannon Sharpe and Chad Johnson on their “Nightcap” podcast that, โTyreek Hill is just chasing clout.โ
However, Lyles put the playful banter about a head-to-head race on hold in light of a more serious event involving Tyreek Hill. On September 8, Hill was handcuffed and detained by Miami-Dade police during a traffic stop, a situation that quickly escalated beyond routine procedure.
The incident resulted in the officer-involved being reassigned to administrative duty following concerns about the handling of the situation. Lyles acknowledged the gravity of the event, stating that Hill’s detainment is a far more significant matter than their friendly rivalry.
โThe two scenarios are completely differentโone is about being human, and the other is about sports,โ Lyles emphasized. โNo one should have to endure what Tyreek went through, regardless of the circumstances. At the end of the day, weโre all human beings, and we deserve to be treated with respect.โ
Despite the seriousness of the situation, Lyles didnโt shy away from the idea of racing Hill, provided Hill was genuinely interested. He confidently added that Hill could give it a try in a one-on-one matchup, but no matter the outcome, it wouldnโt change his standing as the world champion.
โIn terms of running a race, look, man, youโve got to be serious,โ Lyles stated. โEveryone wants to jump straight to the top. Everybody wants to challenge the fastest man because they think it is easy or that I have taken an easy path. You canโt just take a shot at the title, but Iโll let you take a shot at me,โ he added with a confident grin. Lyles made it clear that while the challenge is open, thereโs more to it than just stepping up to the plate.
