Who is Kyler Murray?

Kyler Cole Murray entered the world on August 7, 1997, in Bedford, Texas. He is a third-generation Korean American, born to Misun Henderson and Kevin Murray, who famously played quarterback at Texas A&M University. His cousin, Devin Duvernay, is a professional football player for the Baltimore Ravens, and his uncle, Calvin Murray, had a career in Major League Baseball, playing for the Chicago Cubs, San Francisco Giants, and Texas Rangers.

Kyler himself is an Allen High School alumnus, noteworthy for earning the title of Mr. Texas Football twice—a feat unmatched by any other player—and for being named the Gatorade Football Player of the Year during his senior year. During his time at Allen High, he led the football team to a remarkable 43 consecutive wins and three state championships.

Kyler wrapped up his high school career undefeated in 42 games and was universally recognized as a five-star recruit by prestigious sports ranking sites like ESPN, 247Sports, and Scout.com. Apart from football, he also excelled in baseball, playing as a second baseman and shortstop.

Unique in his versatility, he was chosen to play in both the Under Armour All-America Football Game and the Under Armour All-America Baseball Game, becoming the first athlete to be selected for both events. In May 2014, he committed to play both sports at Texas A&M University, following in his father’s footsteps.

However, Kyler opted out of the 2015 Major League Baseball draft to join Texas A&M, despite being considered a top baseball prospect. At Texas A&M, he initially competed with Kyle Allen for the role of starting quarterback, but Allen secured the position initially. Kyler was given a chance to lead as quarterback after the team faced two consecutive losses.

In his debut as a starter, Kyler stood out by being one of only two Southeastern Conference quarterbacks in the last two decades to achieve over 100 yards in both passing and rushing in a single game, scoring a touchdown each way. After two more games, however, the team reinstated Allen as the starting quarterback. In December 2015, Kyler announced his transfer to the University of Oklahoma, sitting out the 2016 season due to NCAA transfer rules.

In 2017, he stepped up as the backup quarterback for the Sooners when starting quarterback Baker Mayfield faced disciplinary actions, starting the game on November 25. The following year, Kyler was the principal quarterback for Oklahoma and was awarded the Heisman Trophy at the end of the season, acknowledging his pivotal role in the team’s success, which included securing a spot in the College Football Playoff and winning the Big 12 Championship. Additionally, he played as a center fielder and left fielder for the Oklahoma Sooners baseball team.
